Yelp client review:

David Piotrowski represents moving companies that specialize in household goods moves. David Piotrowski has several years worth of experience and knowledge in overseeing compliance issues. Our goal is to ensure that our clients are in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations. David Piotrowski can advise you of the required documents for each move that you do and we can provide these documents to you. We can customize these documents with your name and logo and make each document reflect the nature of your company while making sure the legal requirements exist in each document. Such documents include, but are not limited to, Bills of Lading, Order for Service, Inventory Sheets, and Estimates. We can also provide your company with its own, personalized tariff that is custom-made and tailored to the types of moves that you perform. If you have received a "Notice of Claim" from the DOT, we can represent you.

We can help train your sales staff of the various rules in giving estimates to potential customers and how to handle customer service issues. We can inform your dispatch team on what documents must be completed and how to complete each of them. And we can assist your management team by giving them the necessary tools that they need to effectively manage the company.

If you like, we can also handle your claims for you. Mr. Piotrowski has been certified by the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) in their claims and arbitration certification program.

Tariffs

Domestic interstate moving companies are required to publish their own tariff.  If interested, this law office can work with you to create a custom tariff.  The firm offers two types of tariff publishing services.  Both comply with all regal tariff requirements.

The EZ-Tariff solution is an automated process that is completed online by the client.  The Advanced-Tariff solution is handled directly between a transportation attorney and the moving company and allows for further customization.

For more information on tariffs, please review the custom tariff page.

Custom Moving Forms

Every interstate move must have a Bill of Lading, Order for Service, Estimate, and other forms.  You can purchase generic forms, or you can hire us to create custom documents that will have your company name and license numbers, as well as include information pertinent to YOUR business and your company.

If we create your tariff for you, your custom moving documents terms will match the terms specified in the tariff, providing seamless integration.  The documents will include custom information pertaining to your company, as well as general information that is required by law to be on these documents.

Learn more about custom documents on the customized moving forms page.

Interstate Operating Authority

This firm assists individuals and companies needing to obtain their USDOT and MC numbers.  We assist both carriers (companies that transport the goods) and brokers (companies that arrange for another company to transport the goods).  This office can also assist individuals in forming a corporation or other business entity for your moving company.

For more information on obtaining your interstate operating authority,  please view the household goods moving company license page.

FMCSA Audit Preparation

Interstate household goods moving companies who received an audit notice from the FMCSA for a compliance review should prepare ahead of the audit.  This firm assists moving companies prepare for such an audit.  We perform "mock" audits which will outline the strengths and weaknesses of the moving company to help them better prepare for the audit.

Additional information is available on FMCSA Audit Preparation and USDOT Compliance Reviews.

Claim Management

As a moving company, you are required by law to handle your claims in a certain manner.  Outsource your claims to this firm so that you can focus on your business instead of on negotiating and managing your claims.  We offer several monthly packages for household goods claims management.

NVOCC Authority

Moving companies wishing to transport household goods internationally are likely to need an NVOCC license.  This firm can assist with the application process with the Federal Maritime Commission.

For more information on the NVOCC authority, visit our NVOCC page.

Tool to Calculate Shipment Size

One of the biggest areas for claims is when the moving company wants to charge more because the customer decides to ship additional items than what had originally been estimated.  We offer a tool that allows customers to enter their own item list and submit it online.  Once the list is submitted, both the moving company and the customer will receive a copy.  On the day of the move, the moving company can compare this list with the actual items being tendered.  An example of this tool can be found here.

Information for Household Goods Shippers (Customers)

Unfortunately, many customers of moving companies get the short-end of the deal and are often forced to pay more before their goods are delivered, also known as holding the goods "hostage." Other customers are quoted one price and then later find out, after their goods have been picked up, that they need to pay a lot more money because the estimate was for "x" pounds and the actual weight of their shipment was "y" pounds. Customers are provided certain rights under federal law to protect against less-than-honest movers.

If you feel you have been taken advantage of in a "moving scam" or "moving fraud," we may be able to assist you in your claim against the moving company.

This firm can assist you in filing your moving company claim with the moving company. Many common claims arise due to damages and/or missing items. We can act as your attorney in organizing, drafting the necessary documents, filing, and resolving your claim based upon the contractual obligations of both parties. We can advise you of your rights and the company's obligations under federal law.

Moving companies are required by law to follow certain procedures and guidelines. Failure to abide by these laws creates great liability for moving companies. Unfortunately, many moving companies are able to get away with "moving scam" and "moving fraud" because there are simply not enough people who know this complex area of the law.

Some helpful brochures to assist shippers have been prepared by the government agency regulating the industry, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, (FMCSA), which is part of the Department of Transportation (DOT):
